Introduction: cultural policies for sustainable development

Sustainable development has long conceptual roots, and international organisations have played a significant role in articulating the meaning of the term and the content of the dominant discourses. Within these frames, the concept of cultural sustainability tends to be diversely defined and operationalized. This article and special issue examine culture and sustainable development in ways that articulate and contemplate different roles for cultural policy.

This Article analyses the effects of succession of States in respect of international treaties on human rights. This is a matter not codified by the Vienna Convention on Succession of States in respect of Treaties. We have to bear in mind that human rights treaties have been adopted by international organisations, which have developed their own practice both for the succession of States as States Members of an international organisation and for the succession of States as Contracting Parties to treaties that the United Nations, the Council of Europe or the European Union have adopted in the field of human rights.
Suitable for Western Audiences: UNESCO and the Self-fulfilling Prophecy of Cinematic Cultural Diplomacy

Through a reading of cinematic cultural diplomacy in the post-World War II UNESCO context, this study focuses on the potential cinema holds for speaking to the politics of difference. Traditionally seen as problematic and conflictual, this study suggests that for UNESCO, difference is not the source of war and conflict, but of peace. It provides an analysis of Orient: A Survey of Films Produced in Countries of Arab and Asian Culture, a 1959 film catalogue published by UNESCO and the British Film Institute with the aim to “stimulate the presentation of films which might give audiences in the West a fuller and more informed idea of the ways of life of Eastern peoples”.
